For 27 percent of U.S. adults living with disability, a medical diagnosis often becomes a barrier—not a gateway to care.
At the TEDx NYU Langone Health event “Beyond Boundaries: Innovations for a Healthier Tomorrow,” disability specialist Megan Morris, PhD, MPH, draws on personal experience to demonstrate how assumptions and stereotypes about disability—rather than simple assessments of actual abilities—can negatively impact patient care.
She stresses that disability is a characteristic, not a limitation, and urges providers to take one simple step: “Ask patients about any disability and document the information in a medical chart.”
